How to Save Money on Moving Expenses

You’ve bought your dream home. Now comes the fun part. You are packing and moving. There’s a lot more to it, of course, so here are some moving tips from your Gull Lake Real Estate Team to help get you started and possibly things you haven’t thought about that could save you money on your move.

Rent a Truck

Renting a truck can often be a little cheaper than hiring a large moving company with a bigger vehicle than you may need. Research moving companies in your area. Request a quote for moving. Then, reach out to the rental truck companies and compare rates. Is it cheaper to rent a truck?

Hire a Helper

If family and friends are unable to help you pack, consider hiring some local help. Place an ad on social media with date and time needed, how much you are willing to pay, and how long you think the move will take. Factor in travel time if it’s further away. Then, determine if the cost of hiring help (could be a local high schooler or family friend in need of a little pocket change) and renting a truck will still be less expensive than hiring movers. If the answer is no, reserve the moving company.

Avoid Buying Boxes

Whether you do online shopping or know when the local grocer stocks their shelves, there is no reason to buy boxes. Put out feelers with neighbors and friends for any boxes they may have lying around. It doesn’t matter what size boxes some may have, as you’ll need a variety of sizes to pack your belongings. From small to large, organize your move with DIY packing.

Newspaper vs. Bubble Wrap

Bubble wrap can also be an unnecessary moving expense when your local convenience store or grocer has plenty of papers in stock. Newspapers are biodegradable and better for the environment. So, when you wonder what to wrap those breakables in during packing, consider the fact that you are also doing something nice for Mother Nature. If you go the bubble wrap route when packing for your move, then donate whatever you have left to the next person in need.

Organize Your Packing

You’ll know better than anyone else where you want your belongings to end up. If you’re packing the kitchen, label your moving box with ‘kitchen’ so that it’s easier to unload boxes at the new place. If boxes are labeled with ‘breakable,’ then the mover will know to be extra careful with delivery. The same goes for every other room in the home. Instead of piling the boxes up in the front room, they can go straight to where they’ll need to be unpacked. It can save a lot of time in the long run.

Don’t Forget the Little Things

Once the hard work has been done, and you’ve saved some time and money on your move, don’t forget to forward your mailing address, connect utilities at the new place, and create a meal prep plan to make meals less of a headache during your move. It’s the little things that are often overlooked during a move.

You’re all set! Now, you can enjoy the new place without headaches or hassle and you’ve saved a little bit of money.
