Prepare Your Home for Winter + Hardware Stores in Richland/Gull Lake


Do you feel the cooling temperatures? We sure do and do you know what that means, winter is coming. As winter can be hard on your home, it is important to prepare. Do these 12 things to prepare your home before it gets too cold:


  1. Insulate the walls and attic against drafts

  2. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows

  3. Replace damaged, loose or missing shingles that may leak during a winter storm

  4. Clear your gutters

  5. Remove tree branches that could get weighed down with ice or snow and fall on your house or your neighbors

  6. Wrap water pipes in your basement and crawl spaces with insulation sleeves to slow heat transfer

  7. Turn off exterior faucets, as these pipes can burst if they freeze

  8. Drain your lawn irrigation system

  9. Check your roof to see if it can sustain the weight of a heavy snowfall

  10. Add extensions to your downspouts so that water runs away from the home foundation

  11. Service your furnace and replace filters monthly

  12. Clean your chimney to prevent fires and carbon monoxide from creeping into your home.

  13. Stock up on the winter essentials – salt or ice melt, shovel and more.
